Are you that kind of person who starts a project but struggles to finish it? Do you sometimes even give up finishing what you started? Don’t worry: you’re not alone and this is not an incurable problem.
If you’re having a hard time finishing your projects, it might be because of a lack of planning and/or organization. If you don’t plan things properly, you can quickly feel overwhelmed and stressed, and so you give up.
Here are five pieces of advice to help you get your projects finished, and feel great about it!
Estimate the resources you need
Before starting to work on your idea, figure out how much time and effort it will require. The objective is to have a guideline global overview. Don’t spend too much time on this step: it is just about drawing up a quick plan. That way, you’ll know approximately how long your project is going to take you and you’ll be able commit to it until the end.
Break your project down into a series of manageable tasks
If you’re the kind of person who easily disengages from a project because you quickly feel overwhelmed, I recommend that you to use a task management application - mostly because you’ll need a tool that helps you follow up on the things you need to do.
So, start by dividing your idea into doable tasks (tasks that you can achieve within one day). Then, note those tasks in your task manager and organize them according to the day/week you plan on working on them. That way, you’ll be able to keep track of all your upcoming tasks, you’ll have an overview of what you have already achieved and you’ll be able to visualise the end of the project.
Here is an example in Azendoo:
Mark the project due dates in your calendar
Along with your task manager, your calendar is your best personal assistant. So, the first thing when you get started on your project is to mark its final due date in your calendar. To go even further, you can also note the deadlines for the individual project tasks in your calendar.
To do so you can use the Azendoo calendar integration. That way, every time you attach a due date to a task it will also be added to your calendar. So no more excuses for not finishing the job!
Track your progress
One of the best things about using a task management application is that you can easily track your progress. You can access all of the tasks you’ve completed (classified by day and/or subject) and then really understand how you work on your projects and what steps you need to take to accomplish the next stage of the project.
Tracking your progress is also a great way to stay motivated.
Stop being a perfectionist
Perhaps one of the reasons you’re having a hard time finishing your projects is that you’re too much of a perfectionist and in that sense, for you a project is never finished: you feel like you can always do better. So stop being perfectionist, otherwise you will never move forward! Be thorough, but not a perfectionist.
